It's better to choose private transfer or taxi from Howrah Station to Sonagachi?
Hey everyone, in a couple of weeks I’m planning to be in Kolkata — I’m coming for an exchange program, and I need to figure out how to get from Howrah Station to the Sonagachi area, where the university has arranged our accommodation. I’ll have two huge suitcases full of books and personal belongings, so local buses or commuter trains — which are usually packed to the brim — are definitely not an option. I just won’t be able to squeeze in with all that luggage. How safe is it to take a regular taxi from the station? I’m worried about getting scammed with a broken meter or overcharged fares. Is it even worth trying to negotiate on the spot if you don’t really know the city, or is it better to avoid that altogether?
Also, one more thing — if I wanted to quickly check out the South Park Street Cemetery on the way, is that realistically doable, or is the traffic so intense that it’s better to go straight to the destination without detours?
