Discovering the Unique Monumento de los Heroes de la Restauracion

One of the first things that visitors will see is the ancient Fort of San Felipe. Built by the Spanish in 1514, this towering structure still stands as a monument to subjugation and domination. Inside, you’ll be able to take in beautifully restored murals and stunning tilework.

Just across town is another UNESCO World Heritage Site – Monumento de los Heroes de la Restauracion. Admiring the Magnificent Catedral de San Felipe

The Monumento de los Heroes de la Restauracion is a monument to the memory of those who fought in the wars for independence from Spain. The date on the monument, 1810, commemorates when the first steps were taken toward independence from Spain. The sculptor and architect who designed this monument were José Miguel Sánchez González.

This impressive monument is located in front of the Palacio Municipal in Puerto Plata. It was erected on land donated by Manuel Gómez Pompedda and declared a national heritage site in 1941 by then-president Francisco Franco. The statue atop the pedestal depicts General San Martín with a sword raised over his head, leading his troops into battle against Spanish forces. At his feet lie dead enemies while behind him stands Liberty accompanied by Virtue and Justice, symbols of freedom and democracy.

To either side are statues of Columbus and El Cid, two important figures in establishing Puerto Rico as an independent colony from Spain during the early 1800s. This monument pays tribute not only to those who fought for independence but also to all those who sacrificed their lives so that future generations would enjoy freedom and democracy.
